Indian Railways has officially finalized the fare structure for the highly anticipated Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, with the first service scheduled to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

The fare notification, issued by the Railway Board on January 9, introduces a premium “airline-style” pricing model and significant changes to traditional booking rules.

Finalized Fare Structure (General)

The base fare is calculated on a per-kilometer basis, with a minimum chargeable distance of 400 km. This means even for shorter trips, passengers will pay the 400-km rate.

Class Base Rate (per km) Min. Fare (0–400 km) Max. Fare (3,500 km)
AC First Class (1AC) ₹3.80 ₹1,520 ₹13,300
AC 2-Tier (2AC) ₹3.10 ₹1,240 ₹10,850
AC 3-Tier (3AC) ₹2.40 ₹960 ₹8,400

Note: All fares attract an additional 5% GST.

Route Spotlight: Howrah – Kamakhya (Guwahati)

The inaugural route covers approximately 958 km. The finalized fares for this specific journey are:

  • AC 3-Tier: ₹2,299

  • AC 2-Tier: ₹2,970

  • AC First Class: ₹3,640

For comparison, these fares are roughly 15–20% higher than existing premium services like the Rajdhani Express.

3 Critical Booking Rules

  1. No RAC or Waitlist: In a major departure from Indian Rail tradition, Vande Bharat Sleeper trains will only issue confirmed tickets. There will be no provision for Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) or waitlisted passengers.

  2. Digital-First Refunds: To ensure refunds are initiated within 24 hours, the Railways will prioritize digital payments. Even for counter bookings, digital modes are preferred to facilitate automated refunds upon cancellation.

  3. Automatic Lower Berth Allocation: The booking system will prioritize lower berths for senior citizens (Men 60+, Women 45+) and passengers traveling with small children, subject to availability.
